With one look

　　最近因为在Amazon上帮舅舅买碟，注意到一张叫做《Divas》的唱片，是韦伯几出著名音乐剧中首席女演员的合辑，有个很好的中文翻译——《歌剧女伶》。后来舅舅还让我帮他翻译每一首的歌名和歌手，工整地写在白纸上，嵌到唱片盒。顺便，我们欣赏了一下韦伯五十周岁的庆生晚会，这对于我基本上是个扫盲影音资料。
　　在我印象中韦伯应当年事已高且形容清瘦枯槁，原来他如今大概也不过六十岁，并且长得很像伦敦小商店主，穿个围裙卖腊肠的那种……噢噢宽恕我吧。庆生晚会上有韦伯亲爱的前妻Sarah Brightman，韦伯评价极高的最能表现他音乐精神的Elaine Paige，大帅哥Antonio Banderas等等。
　　撇去《歌剧魅影》、《猫》和《Evita》的经典曲目不说，引起我注意的是《日落大道》里的一首With one look。Glenn Close唱这首歌的时候，装束与《尼罗河上的惨案》里那位色情小说家雷同……汗。舅舅跟我说，这是老太太在回忆当年自己辉煌的时光，所以表情很得意。我后来查阅了《日落大道》的故事背景，才发觉网上把With one look通译为“只看了一眼”有失偏颇，甚至那个偏文艺化的“惊鸿一瞥”都不正确。《日落大道》改编自五十年代美国的同名黑白电影，女主人公Norma是默片时代的明星，她日后的状态和心情不难想见，基本上跟民国时代的满清遗老类似——时钟对她而言，永恒停止在某一刻。看电影简介，说这是一部揭示人性阴暗面的电影，采批判眼光。然而在韦伯的改编歌剧里，当这首With one look响起，我听到的更多是悲悯。With one look I can break your heart, with one look I play every part...with one smile I'm the girl next door, or the love you've hungered for...听到with one look I put words to shame一句时，我联想到Vivien Leigh和孤独女神Greta Garbo，虽然那不是Norma的时代，一样是花开一簇，各自凋零。
　　小时候看《神雕侠侣》，最讨厌的人自然是闯祸胚郭草包同学，看到最后她在千军万马中想自己奇异的心事，我就暗笑：该啊。后来再去读这一段，看到的却是那朵娇纵却笨拙，不知道该如何表达自己心事的玫瑰，忽然就同情起这位郭大小姐来。她少年早慧的家妹早早明白，即使是帝王将相，也不能事事如意。草包却在浑浑噩噩中，闲掷几多青春。
　　我发觉我对女人便很容易心软。
　　回到《日落大道》，这个故事模式，至少是主角的样式，很容易让我联想到《欲望号街车》。美人迟暮，真的是很悲的。
